Is a resident led community organization, chartered by the US Department of Housing and Urban Development. We advocate for social and housing policy changes that are beneficial and in the best interest of the families of Greenleaf.
The Greenleaf Gardens Extension and Additions resident council is fiscally sponsored by the Greenleaf Gardens Community Development Corporation, which is a non-profit organization authorized under Internal Revenue Code 501(c)(3), EIN 83-4297299.
We work with residents of the community to create and implement educational programs and activities that can enrich the lives of our families.
The Greenleaf Gardens Resident Council is comprised of the residents of the Greenleaf Gardens Extension and Additions housing units. The Extension and Additions parts that are in the name of the resident council, are included because they comprise specific units of housing located in the Greenleaf Gardens community. In all, the Greenleaf Gardens community makes up 140 housing units that includes townhomes and apartments.
The resident council is led by the resident council executive board. The board members are volunteers from the Greenleaf community and the mission of the Greenleaf Gardens Resident Council is to wholeheartedly serve and support the families of the Greenleaf community through social, educational, economic and self empowerment initiatives that can positively transform their lives.
The community was constructed in 1958, around the time the SW quadrant of Washington, DC was undergoing urban renewal. Low-income housing was placed in the area to accommodate workers who arrived in the city to work in the Navy Yards on M St. S.E. The Greenleaf name is believed to be the namesake of James Greenleaf, a land speculator who spent a lot of time in the area during the 1700's.
Fast forward to the present, and the community is proposed to be redeveloped in a few years. Many believe this is another form of urban renewal happening again in the same area. Although change is necessary to improve the housing conditions that current residents have suffered through, the resident leaders of Greenleaf stand firm in ensuring that the redevelopment of the community shall place the needs of it current residents first.
This redevelopment will only happen, "With Us, Not To Us!"
